Invitation to participate in Vision-Aid fund raiser 2020, "The Jewel of Justice"

Vision-Aid is pleased to extend an invitation to participate in the 2020 Vision-Aid mega dance production. The annual program is Vision-Aid’s largest fundraiser to help the visually impaired live with independence and dignity. Vision-Aid hopea to raise a record level of funds this year with the production “The Jewel of Justice: The Saga of Kannagi”, yet another dazzling creation by Sri Madurai R. Muralidaran, and staged by the local talents of New England with the blessing, direction and support of Guru Muralidaran.

Vision-Aid requests it supporters to spread the word about this great opportunity to work with talented fellow dancers from the New England area. It will be chance of a lifetime to perform under the guidance of one of the titans in the field of Bharatanatyam, Guru Madurai R. Muralidaran. Shri Murali's productions need no introduction to New England community. His previous sold-out productions in Boston include “The Invincible Spear”, “Golden Armor, Golden Heart: The Story of Karna”,  “Charmer, Warrior, Guide: The Story of Krishna”, “The Iconic Avatar” and “The Dancer’s Pledge”. All garnered great reviews and appreciation from the Boston audience.  It is always a wonderful experience when to work under a motivated and talented team for a great cause!

“The Jewel of Justice" is based on the ancient Sangam Tamil epic, Silapadhigaram, a tale that weaves many threads of betrayal and loyalty.  This riveting plot will be supported, as always, with original music and choreography by Sri Madurai R. Muralidharan, as well as projected backdrops, grand props and English super titles.

2020 Event


Category 1: Teachers, professional dancers & post-arangetram students (age 14 & above) (for character and essential ensemble roles)
Category 2: Pre-arangetram students with at least 5 years of experience learning Bharatanatyam and a great attitude towards learning (age 11+) (for ensemble roles)
Category 3: Junior dancers (age 8-12) (for minor children’s roles and scenes)
Category 4: Male performers (for male roles and folk dances— only enthusiasm to act is required -- any sort of dancing or acting experience is a plus)
A video snippet is requested from each dancer, as an audition piece, to make appropriate assignments.


Time Commitment

All dancers are expected to commit to all rehearsals, as everyone needs to be present to achieve the coordination and well-defined formations required by a professional production. Any exceptions should be discussed well ahead of time and everyone is expected to be present during the final weeks.

Weekly practices starting in April or May, possibly 2/week if the participant is in several dances to learn ensemble dance choreography and formations.
Daily rehearsals on weekends and evenings from June 26th through the show date to work on scenes, polish and perfect under director's supervision.
Rehearsals will be held throughout New England in places like Lexington, Nashua, Bellingham, etc. Vision-Aid will try to share the commute burden across participants as evenly as possible.

Participation fees

Participants must pay a participation fee for which they will receive a tax-deductible receipt from Vision-Aid.              

Categories 1&2: $200 donation to Vision-Aid + Cost of costume (TBD but approximately $120)  (Will receive two premium complementary tickets)
Categories 3&4: $100 donation to Vision-Aid (Will receive one regular complementary ticket) + Cost of costume rental

Fundraising Commitment

Each participating family is expected to sell a minimum of 10 tickets.  Vision-Aid will make the first 10 tickets available to each dancer at its early bird price.
Time spent in rehearsals and ticket sales do count towards Community Service hours
Each year Vision-Aid recognizes outstanding contributions in fundraising with its Vision-Aid Ambassador awards at the event.
